10 Free and Easy Ways to Improve Your Alexa Ranking

Tuesday Apr 13, 2010

Alexa, which is owned by Amazon.com, gives away a free toolbar that you can download and install in your browser. Alexa is then able to keep track of the sites you visit and compute the traffic ranking of those websites, with a rank of “1″ being the assigned to the most visited site.

If you want a more technical definition, Alexa explains it like this:

“The traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and data obtained from other, diverse traffic data sources, and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach). As a first step, Alexa computes the reach and number of page views for all sites on the Web on a daily basis. The main Alexa traffic rank is based on a value derived from these two quantities averaged over time (so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users).”

In April 2008 Alexa revised its methodology so as to “aggregate data from multiple sources to give you a better indication of website popularity among the entire population of Internet users”. (http://awis.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html)

How accurately this method reflects the actual surfing patterns of all Internet users is open to question. However, if you bear in mind that by the end of 2005 the toolbar has been downloaded well over 10 million times you will realize why many people still think that Alexa offers one of the best approximations that we have of website ranking, especially for the top 100,000 or so websites.

That is why Alexa remains an important measure of a website’s status and is used as a quick way to assess the popularity of a website by advertisers looking for the maximum exposure for the their money. Websites with a higher Alexa ranking also tend to be trusted more than those with a low ranking, so it is in the interest of website owners to get their sites ranked as highly as possible with Alexa.

Here are some quick and easy tips to help you do that without spending a single dollar!

1. Install the Alexa toolbar and set your website as your homepage.

2. Copy and paste an Alexa rank widget onto your website. You can get the widget code at http://www.alexa.com/site/site_stats/signup. As well as informing your visitors about your Alexa rank, it will also keep Alexa updated about the number of unique visitors surfing your site.

3. Create a customized version of the Alexa tool bar, Then place a link on your site to the download page and invite your visitors to download it. You will also earn Amazon commissions every time a user shops on Amazon via the toolbar link.

4. If you have a Wordpress blog there is a plug-in for Alexa Ranking (wp-Alexa-redirect-0.3plug-in) that you can use.

5. Submit your site to web directories. Although a lot of directories charge a registration fee, you can still find many that are willing to list your site free of charge or in exchange for a reciprocal link. A lot of the webmasters who browse web directories have the Alexa bar installed, so if they click your link it will help your Alexa traffic rank.

6. Become an active participant on Internet marketing and SEO forums. Again, a lot of those forum participants are already webmasters and a high percentage will use the Alexa toolbar when they surf. Place a link to your site in your signature and your rank will improve when any of those people click through.

7. A lot of Asian and Australian websites feature in the Alexa top 100,000 and you can bet that a lot of website owners will have the Alexa toolbar installed, so it makes sense to join social networking sites that are popular in those regions, such as:

* http://www.orkut.com – Orkut is owned by Google and is the second most visited site in India.

* http://hi5.com – Hi5 has an Alexa ranking of 17 at the time of writing this article.

8. Become an Alexa expert and post articles that discuss Alexa ranking and SEO tips. This will attract people to your site who may be interested in downloading your toolbar, or people who have already done so. Either way, it will be good for your Alexa ranking. You could even build a whole category of articles on your website devoted to this theme.

9. Set up a freebie page on your website and post a list of useful tools to attract other website owners to your site. Include another link to your Alexa toolbar download page.

10. Get into the habit of using Stumbleupon and other bookmarking sites to spread the word whenever you post a new article on your website or blog. Set up a group of fellow website owners so that you can have run reciprocal stumbling campaigns for better results.

If you apply these ten quick and easy methods you will definitely see an improvement in your Alexa rank and you should also start to attract more traffic to your site!

How to Protect your Page Rank of Website

Friday Apr 9, 2010

For Google is still the undisputed king of traffic, regardless of what’s on the horizon, Google is the major deliver of the web’s traffic.

That’s why losing your high Google PR ranking, sometimes overnight, can be so devastating for the struggling webmaster or

marketer.

Read this article to discover how you as a webmaster can protect yourself from lost

profits and traffic, even if Google pulls the plug on your site or PR, while putting another one of their endless algorithms into place.

10 Ways to Outsmart Google’s PageRank System Here’s a list of things you can do to lessen the impact of a sudden drop of the

almighty Google PageRank:

* Diversify your traffic, make sure you cultivate other sources of traffic other than the search engines. Form partnerships and strategic

links with other webmasters. Interact in forums and online communities.

* Provide quality information and free products or services that get ‘good word of mouth’ recommendations from your visitors. Content

will always be king — make sure it reigns supreme on your site.

* Pick the right domain name. If you can, choose a short catchy keyword for your domain, one people will remember and

would naturally type into a search engine or browser to find what they’re looking for on the web. For example: www.hotels.com.

* If you’re having success with your site,(or/and especially if you’re not) venture into off-line advertising and promotion. Use traditional

promotional products, t-shirts, caps, bumper stickers, etc. to promote your URL. You can also try PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising to

provide you with targeted traffic and sidestep the search engines. Well sort of!

* Try viral products like ebooks, reports and free software programs to get your links out into the marketplace. You can also try

product or site testimonials which are another great source of targeted traffic.

* Be extremely careful of any out-going links from your site. Don’t link to bad neighborhoods (link farms, banned sites, etc.) Google

will penalize you for bad links so always check the PageRank of the sites you’re linking to from your site.

* Onsite SEO factors does have an influence on rankings — make sure your site is dressed to kill. Pay attention to keyword density,

title descriptions, meta tags, alt tags and interior linking structure. If you can, optimize your site for all three major search engines:

MSN, Yahoo and Google. But don’t stop there, also submit your site to the countless other smaller search engines on the web. It’s the

old adage, don’t put all your eggs into the ever-changing Google basket or you’re probably turn your site and yourself into one

desperate basket case.

* Along those same lines, have a large spread of keyword phrases that you’re targeting with the content on your site. Don’t go after

extremely competitive keywords which have countless major players with deep pockets buying links, left right and center. Instead,

pick a whole range of keyword phrases that have less or little competition. All these keyword phrases will add up to a flood of traffic

for your site. Phrases that for the most part won’t be affected by a sudden drop in PageRank. One good site for finding these

keywords is www.nichebot.com, it will give both the number of hits and the amount of competition for each keyword.

* There is one more strategy you must explore if you want to lessen the power and importance of your own site’s PR. One strategy

that will bring in tons of Google traffic even if your PR is ZERO. You must utilize the PageRank of other sites on the web. Use off-page

optimization for your major keywords. Build countless anchor text links through keyword rich articles, content related blogs and

products that benefit from the high PR of other sites on the web.

* Keyword rich articles are some of the best examples of this method, placing them on high PR sites will filter Google traffic through

these articles onto your site. It will also warm up these visitors before they reach your site and they will be more receptive to any of

your site’s offering; never underestimate the power of the Pre-sell.

Build enough of these links and a sudden drop in your own Google PR ranking won’t drastically affect your bottom line or the

amount of quality traffic you are receiving. What’s even more satisfying, if you build these links, partnerships, and off-site optimization

– your Google PageRank will probably go up. If it doesn’t, who cares, for you will have Google-Proofed your site against any sudden

drop in your site’s PR rankings and broadened the reach of your site by using the high PR of other sites on the Web. In the process,

you will have protected your site and yourself from the big bad Google PR wolf. You don’t have to conquer Google, you just have to

outsmart it!

Splog: Rank Stealing in Blogging Fashion

Saturday Apr 3, 2010

From the nasty business of spammers comes a higher level of spamming: that of forming a splog. Splog is often confused with other forms of spamming, but it is set apart in a way that the spammer associated with it is considerably more sophisticated, daring and intrusive enough to infiltrate many blogging systems for revenue.

Splog is not what others confuse to be comment spam in blogs. Rather, a splog is actually coined from the terms spam and blog, pertaining to those blogs that are generated merely for profit of the spammer.

A typical splog contains text copied from other blogs, usually done in incoherent fashion. Innate in every splog are links to various websites with no particular use. The same goal for creating comment spam exists. It aims to generate traffic for the said links and make them rank high in Google search results for particular keywords. It is tailored specifically to cater to the pre-determined algorithm that search engines use that determine which websites rank higher over others.

Annoying as it is, there is about a splog in every five or six free blogging software accounts, on estimate. Most prone to splog abuse are blog hosting sites which are supported by the search engine, such as Blogspot for Googlestill mainly due to the fact that Google actually provides special ranking hits for blogspot account users as compared to other websites. Apparently, splog makers know which are the most often-visited online haunts and they try their very best to infiltrate those systems, aiming to not just increase by means of volume, but by hitting various exposures in a single click.

A splog steals the limelight of popular links by means of using and copying titles and words. Any famous blog can be stolen of its rights if a splog maker decides to make a blog with the same title to generate the much-needed traffic. Online surfers looking for the real thing will find themselves dismayed at arriving in websites that are not at all related to what they were looking for to begin with. This is especially frustrating for those who are sincerely looking for authentic and usable information.

As of now, a splog is quite difficult to trace, given the freedom and leeway given for every potential blog user (or abuser). The best way to diminish the existence of splog in the blogosphere will most likely have to be by means of reporting splog viewings to different websites tailored to police suspicious websites and block them off the search results.

At this point in time, search engines find it more difficult to eliminate splogs as compared to other spamming techniques. While comment spam can be filtered, an entire spam account is much more difficult to block in a system, especially if the blogging software provider is well-acclaimed and receives so many account creations to manage in a single day. A splog can also be transmitted via RSS feeds.

An ounce of prevention is definitely better than a pound of cure as far as splog proliferation is concerned. It would be best to sign up for a blog host that knows about the proliferation of splog and has security measures or moderation techniques that address the whole splog problem.

Why is my company’s Google page rank different in Firefox compared to IE?

Friday Apr 2, 2010

My coworkers and I are struggling to work this out. In IE 7 our comany is ranked no.2 on page 1 and in Firefox we are on page 6. And on IE 6 we are on page 10. Does anyone know why the Google’s ranking would be so random?

Thanks
Selby

Google personalizes results, using whatever information they can gather – if you’re connected to a gmail account, for example, or ’signed in’ to a Google services of some kind, then they can identify your search requests and try to present information they think you’ll find relevant, rather than generic search results. If you’re not signed in, then the cookies on your computer will enable you to be tracked.

The best way to really get an accurate idea of your search engine ranking with Google is to use a dedicated tool (there are online free services, or downloadable toolbars) or a clean account and browser that are dedicated solely to the task (no surfing, nothing else).

Blogging to Increase your Rank

Thursday Apr 1, 2010

An online diary or journal, which is regularly updated, is termed as a blog. An acronym of weblog, a blog is used to narrate experiences or share information online with like minded people. It is basically done to interact with people or share the information relating to a product or service that a company or individual offers. But, lately, a blog has been identified as one of the primary tools in Search Engine Optimization.

Any website has to be optimized to get indexed in search engine result pages. It has to be infused with keywords apart from offering fresh and original content. Websites satisfying these conditions are ranked high by search engines. Blogs offer exactly the same and hence get a high ranking by major search engines.

Why are blogs ranked high by search engines?

A search engine highly ranks websites with original content. A good blog rich in fresh and original content can, hence, augment the chances of improving a website’s ranking.

Another criterion that a search engine relies upon for ranking a website is the number of genuine back links that it receives. If the blog on a website is made interesting enough for fellow bloggers, regular readers and popular websites alike, there is no reason for the blog not to receive back links from all of them. Fervently sticking to a particular topic on the blog also makes it easy to get links from related websites and blogs. Inbound links can also be generated by getting your blog registered in one of the many blog directories. Thus your blog will get syndicated through the Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed, and notify regular readers of new postings and updates. It is a known fact that updated and edited sites are spidered more often by search engines thereby helping them in getting indexed almost instantly. Blogs can be used to point spiders and bots in the direction of your website.

Also, links from trusted sources are more valuable than links from new or unknown websites. Search rankings can be particularly boosted with links from .edu and .gov extensions. Blogs or forums with these extensions can be found. One can participate in the discussions of these blogs and the forum signatures and blog comments can fetch you back links. But be mindful of the content of your own blog or be ready to face the no follow attribute to your links.

The structure of a blog, which is devoid of flash, java script, or messy table structures, makes it easy for the search engine spiders to crawl through it. The Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) based blogs are trouble free to crawl through and HTML text rich. Frequent updates – be it five times a week or on a daily basis – makes the search engine spiders visit the website more frequently for fresh quality content. One or more entry a day can ensure frequent spidering of your websites in comparison to other sites that do not use blogs.

Another reason for blogs being ranked high by search engines is that some blog host applications such as the movable type create a new page for each entry made. With search engines preferring larger sites over smaller ones, this feature is particularly helpful in increasing the number of pages of the blog, in turn, ranking it among the top most in a search engine index.

Due to the above-mentioned reasons, a blog, or a website that includes a blog, for that matter, generally ranks high in the search engine result pages. It is, then, quite understandable that webmasters are using blogs to improve their rankings in search engines. Moreover, most of the search engines including Google have specific blog searches addressed to finding information available only on blogs. Webmasters do not afford to be left out of these searches. Hence, it has been found that almost all websites use blogs for the search engine optimization needs of their websites.

A well done blog on a content thin website can do wonders to the traffic inflow and the overall ranking of the website in a search engine index, by gathering coveted links and allowing the benefits of these links flow through to the rest of the site. There are copious instances of targeted blogs having strengthened the websites no end, as far as search engine traffic is concerned.

Other side of the story

The popularity of blogs with search engines made it a weak-target for spammers. Spammers filled blogs with useless comment spam and the real purpose behind creating blogs got lost, with blogs being created only to receive precious link backs to undeserving websites or as a tool to invite spiders to crawl through them more often. Splogging or spam blogging has thus become rampant among webmasters trying to gain an improved ranking in search engine result pages.

To counter this spamming, Google and other search engines have started supporting a no follow attribute that is applied to the links in a blog. It is a way of telling the search engines that the web site owner, does not, in any way, associate with or support the link.

Blogs are one of the best ways to add to the point content to your website. At the same time, it is necessary not to allow the blog to be spammed. A meticulous working on the blog can render it an effective tool in search engine optimization. Keywords can be spoken of in a more meaningful way, while new content, too, can be regularly added without hassesls.

The Rank of Colour Selection in Creating a Usable Web-site

Tuesday Mar 30, 2010

When designing for the web, one aspect of the design that wishes long and hard consideration is colour. Choosing colours without thought or knowledge may discourage users from the site. Picking the right colours with thought and background knowledge could lead to a greater design.

Knowing about colour psychology and symbolism is key to knowing which colours affect populace in certain ways. Colour picture is strongly linked to emotions and notions these as happiness, sadness and passion.

Colours could also be used to emphasise contrast and highlight sections of a webpage that you might need the user to see or interact with these as a promotion box or a buy now button.

Here is a listing of famed colours and how they make citizens feel.

Blue may allude to depth, professionalism, trust and honour. Dark blue is used by myriads corporate companies but this colour can also be construed as cold.

The colour black is about power, style, evil and mourning. Rock music acts often use black backgrounds because of its association with the dark side and anger.

The colour yellow could symbolise wealth, joy optimism and verve. Using yellow in web design is a sensational guise to make components stand out from the rest of the site.

Yellow can be a prestigious colour to bring attention to certain aspects of a web page. It can be linked with joy, happiness and summer.

Black is a very popular background colour as it demonstrates off other colours very well. It is associated with feeling of sexiness, style, elegance and power.

The colour white is very preferred in design web sites like interior design and graphic design. It could create a feeling of space and symmetry. It is linked to peace, simplicity, purity and light.

Grey could be connected to respect, humility, decay and boredom. It is used a lot to create shiny gradients in website design to give a slick, new feel to a web site.

Orange is strongly related to spirituality and healing. It is the colour that symbolises Buddhism and it has a healing pluck about it. It is a bold colour that is not as bright as yellow yet not a deep as red.

In website design, purple is an underused colour, imaginably because it can be noted as a feminine colour. It is also linked to royalty, romance and wisdom.

Grey can be a strange colour as it is not strong. It may be used to create stylish, fashionable and calm web-sites. It is used heavily on technology websites.

The role of colour is not just to make a site look nice, it may be used to evoke notions and emotions from the end user. Choosing colours that irritate the user may display detrimental effects on your site, whilst selecting cleverly may allude that the site lives up to user expectation.
