I know it’s one of those link building strategies that people tend to talk about, but how worthwhile is it really? Is it worth paying for a mass submission via third parties?

I recently got hired as an online marketing link builder. My employer wants me to get 30 links per day. I am not able to complete it in 8 hours per day. Most days it takes 10-11 hours. Instead try making comments on blogs related to your site, answer questions for people on this forum with links to your site, submit your site to directories (there are over 900 of them), write articles and post them on the articles directories, and set up some accounts at the social sites like MySpace and Digg.
